Ricky Gervais volunteers Ricky Gervais to host the Oscars, now that there's an opening

On Tuesday, it was announced that Kevin Hart would host the Oscars. On Wednesday, the actor saw a slew of his old homophobic tweets resurface. On Thursday, he refused to apologize, eventually stepping down from the gig. Now it’s Friday and we’re so, so exhausted.

Alas, the day is still young and Ricky Gervais just entered the conversation. The English comedian, who revolutionized comedy with BBC’s The Office but has since devolved into the kind of guy who brings up his atheism in casual conversation, burst onto Twitter this morning to say that he’d gladly fill Hart’s vacancy.

“Dear cunts in charge of The Oscars—” and oh fuck it just read the thing below.

Gervais is no stranger to the Hollywood awards scene, having hosted the Golden Globes in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2016. His turns, which were characterized by their abrasiveness, received mixed reviews due to his oft-scathing barbs.

But Gervais has become a bit of a liability since then, having leaned hard into the “offensiveness” of his comedy. His most recent comedy special, Humanity, was heavily criticized for jokes many found to be transphobic, and just this morning he spent hours arguing with his followers about how nothing, not even rape and racism, are off-limits for a comedian. Cue Tim looking-into-camera face.

To his credit, even he’s aware that he has no chance in hell of hosting the Oscars.

“I love it when you argue,” he concluded. And, like, we know, Ricky. We know.

The Oscars will air on ABC on February 24. We have no idea who will host it.
