RIP Dave Day of the Monks
Guitarist/banjo player Dave Day of legendary proto-punk art rock band the Monks died Thursday morning after suffering "a stroke or a heart attack" Sunday. If you don't know who the Monks are, here's an opportunity to find out: The band was formed in the mid-'60s by GIs stationed in Germany. Known for their bizarre monk-style haircuts, with shaved bald circles in the middle of their heads, the Monks had an experimental, ahead-of-its-time sound, distinguished by clanging metallic rhythms and the pounding of Day's banjo. Check out this clip from German TV and see for yourself. (Day is second from the left in the opening band shot.)
