RIP Dixie Carter

Veteran actress Dixie Carter has died of undisclosed causes at the age of 70, CNN is reporting. A veteran of film and television, Carter is best known for her role as the levelheaded Julia Sugarbaker on the sitcom Designing Women, which ran for seven seasons between 1986 and 1993 on CBS.

Though her character often served as the mouthpiece for creator Linda Bloodworth-Thomason’s liberal opinions, Carter was an outspoken conservative off screen. She was nominated for an Emmy for her seven-episode appearance on Desperate Housewives, a show created by her former assistant, Marc Cherry. Carter is survived by her husband, actor Hal Holbrook, and two daughters.
