Earle Hagen–the Emmy-winning composer of some of the most indelible TV theme songs of all time–died of natural causes Monday at the age of 88. Hagen also played in the big bands of Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Ray Noble (during which time he wrote the classic "Harlem Nocturne," later used as the theme for Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer); served time as 20th Century Fox's film score arranger and orchestrator; and shared an Oscar nomination with Lionel Newman in 1960 for their musical direction of the Marilyn Monroe film Let's Make Love. He won an Emmy in 1968 for I Spy, but his huge list of credits also boasts shows like The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mod Squad, The Dukes Of Hazzard, That Girl, Eight Is Enough, and The Andy Griffith Show–the last of which he also contributed the trademark whistle to.
