Novelist, photographer, filmmaker, composer, poet, journalist, and much more, Gordon Parks died today at 93. I knew his work best via his films, which included The Learning Tree, the first major studio film by an African-American director, and the first two movies about detective John Shaft, Shaft and Shaft's Big Score (the latter of which, in an odd bit of coincidence, I watched earlier tonight before learning of Parks' death).
