Riverdale creator teases season 2’s “civil war”

Riverdale, the CW’s “Sexy Archie” show that has become so much more than that, reached its shocking conclusion last night, after the revelations of the first season’s penultimate episode. We now know who killed Jason Blossom and why, so that murder mystery is solved, but the finale had another bloody altercation that ended with a possibly fatally wounded Fred Andrews (Luke Perry). As always, a gobsmacked Archie (KJ Apa) looked on while the shit hit the fan, but he’s not going to stay so impressionable for much longer. Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa tells TV Line that Archie’s going to do some serious growing up next season.

“This will be as impactful on Archie as when young Bruce Wayne sees his parents gunned down, or when Spider-Man’s Uncle Ben is shot and killed,” Aguirre-Sacasa says. Apparently, this was no accidental shooting. So season two will send Archie on a path to “heroism,” which means his days of worrying about which passion or girl to pursue will soon be over. But don’t worry, Riverdale isn’t suddenly going to follow Archie through the student loan process; there’s still plenty of melodrama and fun ahead. The arrival of Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) next year will throw a huge wrench into the works, as he’ll bear the original character’s enmity for Archie, who just happens to be dating Hiram’s daughter. In addition to the fallout from the lack of parental approval, Aguirre-Sacasa says he can sum up season two in two words: ”civil war.” Well, at least Jughead ate a damn burger already.
