Riverdale’s Jughead won’t be asexual, will still love burgers
If we know anything about The CW’s upcoming Riverdale it’s that it will be a sexy take on the world of Archie Andrews. In the show, Archie isn’t just engaging in the usual love triangle with Betty and Veronica, he‘s also got a thing going with now-hot Miss Grundy. But what of Jughead, who has recently been portrayed as openly asexual in the Archie comics? Well, apparently he won’t be in the context of the TV series—at least not initially. Actor Cole Sprouse told Hollywood Life that his character “will have romances with women…and burgers,” assuring that his dietary habits remain canon.
But Sprouse is still advocating for a storyline revolving around asexuality, and sees how it could come up down the road. “I think maybe the development of that narrative could also be something very interesting and very unique and still resonate with people, and not step on anyone’s toes. I think sexuality especially is one of those fluid things where often times we find who we are through certain things that happen in our lives,” he explained in the interview. “[If] something like that needs to happen in season one for Jughead to eventually realize that kind of narrative, I’d love to play with that too.”
Riverdale—whose murder-mystery plot recalls Twin Peaks—premieres January 26. Jughead serves as the narrator of the nefarious goings-on.
