The Trump campaign likes to paint Melania Trump as a lady of true class, unsullied by such defeminizing influences as having opinions and expressing them in public. That basically makes her catnip to alt-right Trump supporters—you know, the ones who use the word “cuck” a lot?—who were eager to charge in to save the Slovenian ex-model in distress when the big, bad media came after her for such a silly little thing as cribbing extensively from a speech delivered by the sitting First Lady.
Perhaps that’s why RNC chief strategist and communications director Sean Spicer chose to meet these would-be white knights at their level, quoting—along with other stereotypically Republican favorites like Kid Rock—the fedora-wearing gentleman’s* lingua franca of My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic to defend the future Princess of America on CNN:
Challenged in his assertion by host Wolf Blitzer, Spicer, an adult man who presumably once believed in something, said, “Look, I just quoted Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony. She said something similar, too, so did Mrs. Obama plagiarize her?” He then went on to say he “gave the Clinton campaign credit” for the statement of facts/smear campaign against Melania, which should be news to recently laid-off TV journalist Jarrett Hill, who first made the comparison while sitting in an L.A. Starbucks.
*Yeah, we know that’s a gross over-generalization. No need to tweet at us about it.
