Rob Riggle to star in an adaptation of an Austrian comedy series

Rob Riggle—who has had a bit of trouble finding the right TV vehicle in the past—is set to star in a new single-camera comedy for Fox. Based on an Austrian series called Braunschlag, Riggle will star as the mayor of a struggling town who, desperate to save his community from financial ruin, attempts to pull off an elaborate religious hoax to increase tourism. David Schalko created the original Austrian series, which ran for eight episodes back in 2012. According to Deadline, Riggle’s as-yet-untitled adaptation will be developed by Steve Hely (The Office, 30 Rock, American Dad) and executive produced by both Hely and Riggle.

Fox ordered a put pilot of the series, meaning the network has agreed to either air the pilot or pay a substantial fine for passing on it. It’s essentially a guarantee that the pilot will be picked up, which is good news for Riggle and his latest attempt to find a network home. Now all the show needs is a catchy title to really capture the public’s imagination—perhaps something like Orange Is The New Braunschlag, How I Met Your Braunschlag, or Brookyln Nine-Braunschlag.
