Robert Durst has now been charged with murder, may face the death penalty
After being arrested this weekend, Robert Durst—the subject of HBO’s true crime documentary series The Jinx and the suspected murderer of three people—has been formally charged with murdering Susan Berman in 2000. According to USA Today, Durst’s charge is officially first-degree murder, and that means he might face the death penalty if he gets convicted.
This comes only a day after The Jinx‘s finale, which featured a shocking scene in which Durst—without realizing that he still had a mic on—said, “What the hell did I do? Killed ‘em all, of course,” while going to the bathroom. Durst maintains his innocence, though—at least when he’s not going to the bathroom—and while he is said to be cooperating with authorities, his lawyer says it’s so that Durst can “end all the rumor and all the speculation and have a trial.”
Though we reported earlier that Durst is set to be taken to California—where Berman’s murder occurred—immediately, he is apparently still being held in New Orleans—where he was arrested this weekend—because he was carrying a handgun and a small amount of marijuana when the police picked him up. Either way, he’ll soon be going back to California, and then we’ll have another one of those high-profile murder trials that the media loves to cover so much.
