Robert Rodriguez moves closer to directing Deadpool
After several weeks of flirtation and coy rejection, Fox and Robert Rodriguez are said to be getting serious about possibly maybe making a Deadpool film together, according to the L.A. Times. The X-Men spin-off featuring the smart-assed mercenary has been in the works for a while now, with Ryan Reynolds reportedly “talking every day” with Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about reprising his character from X-Men Origins: Wolverine
despite the minor setback of being decapitated at film’s end.
.
While it's been previously acknowledged that Rodriguez had been sent the Rheese/Wernick script, this announcement is the first indication that he may actually direct the thing—although as the LAT acknowledges, he’s got to get through Spy Kids 4 first. (As for Reynolds, who will be thoroughly consumed by Green Lantern this time next year, he’s been very vocal about making room for both.) Earlier reports suggested that the prospective Deadpool film would adhere closer to his portrayal in the comics, namely his propensity for breaking the fourth wall, so if Rodriguez does direct, here’s hoping for a scene where Deadpool pauses the action to introduce the obligatory cameos from Danny Trejo and Cheech Marin.
