Ronald Reagan accomplished many things in his life, including single-handedly making America the best gosh-darn country in the world by giving rich people more money and therefore ensuring that the country’s economy would always be perfectly maintained. But he was never able to transition his successful political career into Hollywood stardom—if you ignore the Hollywood stardom he achieved prior to his political career, of course.
That’s all about to change, thanks to a team of filmmakers that intends to shop around a Ronald Reagan biopic at the Cannes Film Festival later this month. This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says that the film, fittingly titled Reagan, comes from a script written by Howard Klausner. Klausner was a co-writer on the Clint Eastwood outer-space vehicle Space Cowboys, so Klausner knows a thing or two about old people showing stupid young people how to get shit done—just like Ronald Reagan.
Klausner’s script is based on a pair of books by Paul Kengor, titled God And Ronald Reagan: A Spiritual Life and The Crusader: Ronald Reagan And The Fall of Communism, with the film reportedly told from the perspective of a KGB agent tasked with keeping an eye on the president. It’s worth pointing out that this is a separate project from Reykjavik, the Michael Douglas-starring Ronald Reagan movie, as Reagan deserves multiple movies.
Reagan is still a ways off, but that allows plenty of time to get started on speculation about who should play Reagan. It needs to be a ruggedly handsome cowboy who will appeal to the Fox News crowd. Oh, how about that guy from Knute Rockne, All American?
