Rooney Mara and Nicholas Hoult to star in sci-fi love story
It sounds like next year will be big for sci-fi love stories. First we have Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt as cryogenically frozen intergalactic travelers who fall in love in Passengers, and now The Hollywood Reporter says Rooney Mara and Nicholas Hoult will be starring in their own sci-fi romance. Titled The Discovery, the film will reportedly be set in a world where the existence of an afterlife has been scientifically proven. Hoult will play the son of the guy who discovered heaven/hell/Valhalla, and Mara will be “a woman he falls in love with whose life is tinged by a tragic past.” Presumably, the fact that they know that their lives will continue in some form after they die will also play into the plot, but we’re not sure how. Maybe Hades will claim Mara’s soul because of something from her tragic past, and Hoult will be bummed out about it while he’s hanging out with some cool valkyries? We’d watch that movie, but The Discovery probably won’t be anything like it. Either way, it’ll be directed by The One I Love’s Charlie McDowell (who also co-wrote the script).
