Though films like these can often feel like a broad primer on an artist for the uninitiated, the announcement obtained by Variety describes the project as “a romance more than a traditional biopic,” which will focus on Orbison’s relationship with his wife and manager Barbara who helped stage his comeback in the 1980s. The film is tentatively titled “You Got It,” named after his posthumous top ten single from 1989. Orbison experienced major success in the 1960s with hits like “Crying” and “Oh, Pretty Woman.” In the second half of the decade, the musician tragically lost his first wife Claudette in a motorcycle accident and his two eldest sons in a house fire. His career went through a rougher period in the 70s before a resurgence in popularity, both from his new music and an increased interest in 60s nostalgia, in the 1980s.
“Roy Orbison is a singular talent who holds a special place in our hearts, both as a favorite singer for ourselves and our loved ones, and also as a symbol of the incredible strength and resilience of the human spirit,” Compelling Pictures said in a statement. “It’s been an honor getting to know Wesley, Roy Jr, and Alex and their families, and we believe this unique love story between Roy and Barbara — rife with humor, tension, and emotion, all accentuated by these incredible songs — will reach the rafters like one of Roy’s impossible notes.” Let the casting speculation begin.
