RuPaul to star in new Netflix sitcom AJ And The Queen
Drag empress/impressario RuPaul is branching out from the world of reality TV at last, with Deadline reporting that Netflix has signed her up for a new scripted series, AJ And The Queen. The homage to chimp/trucker TV classic B.J. And The Bear is presumably intentional, since the show’s plot sounds straight out of classic ’80s trope TV: “The series stars RuPaul as Ruby Red, a bigger-than-life but down-on-her-luck drag queen who travels across America from club to club in a rundown 1990’s R/V with her unlikely sidekick AJ, a recently orphaned, tough-talking, scrappy 11-year-old stowaway.”
Obviously, that’s extremely good—more shows need scrappy 11-year-old stowaways, in our professional opinion—and the pot is only seasoned by news that RuPaul will do a new drag number in every single episode. The series is being headed up by former Sex And The City showrunner Michael Patrick King, whose other credits include co-creating 2 Broke Girls. No word, meanwhile, on which scrappy pre-teen the show will tap for its other title role.
