Ryan Gosling dreams of Harrison Ford in the Blade Runner 2049 teaser trailer

After decades of speculation of how on Earth anyone could follow up Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner, the trailer for Blade Runner 2049, Arrival and Sicario director Denis Villeneuve’s attempt to do just that, has arrived. The trailer opens—hopefully not ominously, given the infamous voiceover on the U.S. theatrical cut of Blade Runner—with voiceover from Harrison Ford’s Rick Deckard, who intones with sci-fi gumshoe grit, “replicants are like any other machine. They’re either a benefit or a hazard. If they’re a benefit, that’s not my problem,” over a futuristic cityscape in shades of misty blue.

Cut to contemporary cinema’s other favorite color, and a mystery man in a trench coat wandering a dusty wasteland in search of…something. That man turns out to be Ryan Gosling’s Officer K, and that thing turns out to be Deckard himself, hiding out in a palatial mansion in the middle of the orange desert. Is it a dream? Are they on another planet? Is that just what Nevada looks like 33 years in the future? Most (but not all) will be revealed when Blade Runner 2049 hits theaters on October 6, 2017.
