SAG Awards salutes Carrie Fisher, Mary Tyler Moore, and other stars we lost in 2016
2016 was utterly brutal for any number of reasons, but one of the biggest is the way that iconic and beloved celebrities were taken from us left and right. It lent an air of sorrow to the year, and with awards season in full swing, we’re now getting a few more opportunities to remember the people who have died.
At tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, the “In Memoriam” segment was especially mournful because it wasn’t a tribute from a larger organization like the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences, but a tribute from and for actors—as indicated by the way it was introduced by SAG President Gabrielle Carteris, who referenced an Alan Rickman quote. We saw remembrances for Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and Mary Tyler Moore, of course, but also Anton Yelchin, Abe Vigoda, Prince, and Garry Marshall.
It ended on a photo of Fisher and Reynolds together at the SAG Awards in 2015, and though the camera didn’t show the audience, it seems safe to assume that there were very few dry eyes.
