San Francisco lawmakers may name a tunnel after Robin Williams

Lawmakers in San Francisco are considering adopting a Change.org petition to have a rainbow-painted highway tunnel renamed in Robin Williams’ honor. The Waldo Tunnel, which connects the Golden Gate Bridge with nearby Marin City, features distinctive, rainbow-painted archesreminiscent of the rainbow suspenders Williams wore for his breakout role on Mork & Mindyat its entrance and exit. Williams was an influential member of the San Francisco comedy scene in the ‘70s, and lived in the Bay Area for much of his life. The tunnel currently takes its name from failed 19th century gubernatorial candidate William Waldo, despite the fact that history fails to record what color his suspenders were, or how many funny voices he could have used to make fun of the phrase “San Francisco’s rainbow tunnel.”

The name-change petition was started just days after Williams’ death on August 11, and has already garnered more than 50,000 online signatures.
