Sandra Bullock climbs into Netflix’s Bird Box
Sandra Bullock is the latest big-name actress to sign on for some small-scale film-making at Netflix, with Variety reporting that the Oscar-winner has joined the cast of Susanne Bier’s Bird Box. Bier—who recently scored an Emmy for her work on The Night Manager for AMC—will direct the film from a script by Eric Heisserer, who snagged an Oscar nod of his own last year for his screenplay for Arrival.
The film sounds, frankly, weird as hell, with Bullock playing a blindfolded woman accompanying a pair of similarly inconvenienced children, as they wander through a post-apocalyptic landscape. (It’s based off of the debut horror novel from Josh Malerman, frontman for The High Strung.) We’ve got no clue what any of that has to do with birds, boxes, or some combination therein, but the film is apparently a favorite of Netflix’s new film head, Scott Stuber, who brought it with him when he left Universal to oversee the company’s streaming cinema domain.
