Sarah Silverman’s I Love You, America returns, still trying its darndest to love America

I Love You, America (Hulu, 3:01 a.m.): In our review of the first episode of the first season of Sarah Silverman’s Hulu-dwelling foray into late night, we said that “it feels, just a bit, like an assignment Sarah Silverman got from her therapist.” That was meant neither as condemnation nor praise, but as a reflection of the earnestness with which Silverman approaches her goal: to connect with people who are “unlike-minded.” When it comes to the importance of that goal, your mileage may vary, but whether the “can’t we all just get along” premise appeals or not, Silverman’s conversations with figures like Patton Oswalt and Roxane Gay, as well as her candid monologues, were often worth a look. Odds are that remains true in the show’s second season, premiering today.

Save Me (Starz OnDemand): When writer-star Lennie James’ (The Walking Dead) series first bowed in the U.K. early this year, The Guardian called it “a well-functioning, gripping thriller that sets up a convincing world… then threatens to violently dismantle it, piece by piece.” Months later, it’s finally crossed the pond, and is available to stream in its entirely via Starz OnDemand; if you prefer to watch things at a scheduled time, it begins a three-night run on STARZ In Black tonight at 9:30 p.m. It centers on Nelly (James), a father whose teenaged daughter has gone missing, and Claire (Suranne Jones), the girl’s mother, who accuses Nelly of the kidnapping. James is a terrific actor and so is Jones—she’s best known ’round these parts as The Doctor’s Wife, but she’s got an impressive résumé outside the TARDIS, too. Seems well worth a look if you like British TV, mysteries, or sadness.
