Scarlett Johansson could sing some more in Once director's new musical

Scarlett Johansson may put on display her widely hailed talent for singing better than most people would assume Scarlett Johansson could sing in Can A Song Save Your Life?, a new musical from Once writer-director John Carney. The announcement came from Carney himself, who revealed the casting during an interview in The Sunday Business Post Online. And so far that’s the only source, which is naturally suspect; however, for what it’s worth, it’s been known for some time that Carney was working on the project with executive producer Judd Apatow, so the project does exist, and it has the requisite Apatovian tangent to get made in today’s economy.

The film follows a young singer-songwriter’s romance with a washed up A&R man—and both Mark Ruffalo and Jim Carrey have been discussed for that role, which is certainly an odd grouping. “We’re not sure we can get Mark Ruffalo.” “ Well, is Jim Carrey available?” Anyway, said A&R man has reached a low point in his life that may or may not be saved by a song, depending on whether a song can do that. Specifically, a song sung by Scarlett Johansson, who impressed Carney with her past work on albums like Anywhere I Lay My Head, apparently. And, like many people who bought that album, by just being Scarlett Johansson: “I went out to Los Angeles to meet Scarlett a couple of months ago,” Carney said. “She was everything you could imagine—very hot, elegant, and she’s really smart." So definitely, give her some songs to sing then. [via Movieline]
