Scarlett Johansson forms “super-pop” girl group with the bassist from HAIM
Scarlett Johansson has been at this music thing long enough that it shouldn’t be a surprise to see her cooing into a microphone even when there aren’t any cameras around. (Just kidding—there are always cameras around Scarlett Johansson.) She’s previously covered Tom Waits and Serge Gainsbourg, and now Johansson has discovered a new musical inspiration: glossy, semi-ironic electro-pop.
For this new outing, known as The Singles, Johansson has recruited HAIM member Este Haim as a “hired gun” on drums, as well as singers Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris, and Julia Haltigan as permanent members. “The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls,” Johansson says in a press release. “I love Grimes. And I love the Bangles. And I love the Go-Go’s. I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.”
Together, the group has recorded its first single, “Candy,” with TV On The Radio and Yeah Yeah Yeahs producer Dave Sitek, and is already hocking a 12” colored vinyl single (bubblegum pink, one assumes) of the song. You can decide if this “Candy” gives you a toothache over at Rolling Stone.
