Scarlett Johansson and Este Haim’s new band might have to change its name. The all-girl group, The Singles, released its first track, “Candy,” last week on SoundCloud and is signed to Dave Sitek’s Federal Prism label. Unsurprisingly, however, there is already another band equally enamored with plural nouns called The Singles, and that group has filed a cease-and-desist against Johansson and company “given [the band’s] continuous use [of the name] for more than 15 years.” The non-Scarlett Singles have been together since 1999, toured both Europe and Japan, and have released a number of LPs, EPs, and—you guessed it—singles. (For what it’s worth, Este Haim says her group recorded “Candy” three years ago, though it’s not clear if the quartet chose a band name then.)
Federal Prism’s Jeff Bowers seems to be amenable to a potential switch, telling The Hollywood Reporter that he’d “like to take the vinyl and t-shirts marked as ‘The Singles’ and sell them all and donate all of the money to the Los Angeles Children’s hospital.”
