Scarlett Johansson wants to voice a Disney princess
Scarlett Johansson may have provided the voice for an oddly sexual snake in Disney’s remake of The Jungle Book, but it turns out she actually wants to voice a more conventional Disney heroine. The reveal of Johansson’s Disney princess dreams comes from an interview with The New York Times, which touches on all sorts of different aspects of her career. But when asked what experiences she’d like to create on screen for her two-year-old daughter, Johansson explains:
My daughter is still young. Right now I think we both share the dream that I will someday be a Disney princess, but it’s probably not going to happen. I’ve been asking for that job for the past 20 years, and nobody has booked me.
This actually continues a long tradition of Johansson asking to star in films that no one’s willing to make (as well as starring in roles no one wants to see her in). Since Johansson made her acting debut in 1994, there have been seven new Disney princess films: Pocahontas, Mulan, The Princess And The Frog, Tangled, Brave, Frozen, and Moana. Apparently none of them found her voice suitable, with Mandy Moore, Kelly Macdonald, Kristen Bell, and Idina Menzel voicing the princesses she would be most likely to play (although the jokes about her wanting to play Mulan practically write themselves). But Johansson can at least take solace in the fact that she gets to voice a punk rock porcupine in the upcoming Sing. Perhaps singing porcupines are the new frontier of strong animated heroines.
