Scarsdale surprise: Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David's secret project might be a Broadway play
During a Reddit AMA last week, Jerry Seinfeld gave rise to rampant speculation and Sack Lunch jokes by saying that he and Larry David were working on their first project since their landmark sitcom, a mysterious thing about something/nothing that Seinfeld described as “big, huge, gigantic.” And while many hoped he was hinting at a new TV show, it now seems he was discussing the thing that TV shows eventually turn into: a Broadway play, which Showbiz 411’s Roger Friedman says David told him is currently in the works.
Or, something like that. Mostly the report is about how Friedman went to a fancy party with Sting and Michael Fassbender, which he describes by noting, “It was, as they say, LOL,” despite no one actually “saying” that, and certainly not in the context of “LOL @ all the famous people I am with!” But somewhere amid the laughing out loud at all the tangential celebrity, Friedman also talked to David, and Friedman reports he said this:
Larry, whose hilarious HBO movie Clear History I just re-watched, told me: “I’ve written a play.” A play? For, like, Broadway? “Yes.” And Jerry would star in it? “Maybe,” he said. “We’re talking about it.” Or directing, or producing, sounds like. Don’t forget, Jerry produced and directed Colin Quinn’s one man show on Broadway.
Indeed, and also don’t forget that Jerry dated Bette Midler’s understudy from Rochelle Rochelle, which is, honestly, as concrete a detail as any in this report. Still, based on something Roger Friedman was told after he looked around at a party and saw Larry David, and—having exhausted all other conversation by saying, “Isn’t this LOL?”—harangued David into saying he’s written a play for, like, Broadway, it’s possibly happening. Considering Seinfeld said the project was inspired by “intentional mumbling,” that’s going to be some play.
Meanwhile, Seinfeld, David, and Jason Alexander were spotted today outside the old Tom’s Diner seen on the show—possibly for an episode of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, possibly discussing this mystery project, or possibly just getting together to talk about how LOL life is, like the old times.
