Sony and Scott Rudin are teaming up to make a movie of a comic book from the man who literally wrote the books on comics. Scott McCloud, best known for his works like Understanding Comics, Making Comics, and Reinventing Comics, recently returned to fiction writing after more than 20 years. His new work is The Sculptor, which has been getting very positive reviews. Some even describe it as a masterpiece. Here’s the story:
“David Smith is giving his life for his art—literally. Thanks to a deal with Death, the young sculptor gets his childhood wish: to sculpt anything he can imagine with his bare hands. But now that he only has 200 days to live, deciding what to create is harder than he thought, and discovering the love of his life at the 11th hour isn’t making it any easier!”
Sony won a contentious battle for the rights to the story, and Scott Rudin is attached to the film. No word yet on how this will eventually be spun out into a giant shared universe with other creator-owned comics and their own convoluted spin-offs and tie-ins, but it’s still early.
