Scream 4 makes compelling bid for our attention by casting Alison Brie

Try as we might to feign indifference about the Scream sequel-that-is-not-a-sequel simply out of our own elitist principles, director Wes Craven seems to have found our one Achilles' heel by casting Community/Mad Men star and all-around A.V. Club pinup girl Alison Brie. Heat Vision reports that Brie will play “Rebecca, [Neve] Campbell’s ambitious personal assistant who secretly envies her boss' reluctant fame and fortune.”

We’re just guessing here, but it certainly sounds like Brie is being set up as the film’s token red herring—the obvious suspect whose death in the third act clears the way for a much more convoluted reveal, possibly involving the recently cast Adam Brody (who plays “a cop and college graduate raised on the CSI TV series”) or Battlestar Galactica’s Mary McDonnell, who plays an as-yet-unspecified role. What we know for sure is that Brie is part of a “next generation” cast being brought in with an eye on rebooting the series entirely—joining previously announced fresh meat Hayden Panettiere, Rory Culkin, Emma Roberts (who stepped in for Ashley Greene), Marley Shelton (who replaced Lake Bell), and Anthony Anderson—and that we're listening now. We're not made of stone, people.
