Screw the Oscars, let's see who got nominated for a Fangoria Chainsaw Award

The Oscars are all about managing expectations. Sure, it’d be great if the actual best movies and performances of the year were honored by the Academy—and they are, in the sense that they’re the ones the Academy’s aging membership likes best. In other words, you have to consider the source.

Take Fangoria magazine, which took this morning as an opportunity to nominate its own slate of outstanding horror films and TV series for its 2019 Chainsaw Awards. And surprise, surprise—aside from A Quiet Place, which got one Oscar nomination for Best Sound Editing and picked up five nominations here, there’s absolutely no overlap between the two awards.

Fangoria had the good sense to correct two of The A.V. Club’s pet Oscars snubs, nominating Toni Colette for Best Actress for Hereditary and recognizing Thom Yorke for his score for Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria remake (also nominated for Best Limited-Release Movie.) The horror magazine also did something the Academy apparently couldn’t bring itself to do this year: Nominate a woman for Best Director, in this case Coralie Fargeat for her gloriously gaudy, cathartically brutal Revenge.
