Scully and Mulder still search for the truth as The X-Files returns for season 11
Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, January 3. All times are Eastern. Trust no one.
Top pick
The X-Files (Fox, 8 p.m.): After an overall unsatisfying return last year, Scully and Mulder are at it again, hopefully revising the 10th-season cliffhanger that inspired Zack Handlen’s headline “It’s the end of the world, and The X-Files feels awful.” As “My Struggle III” picks up where “II” left off last February, our favorite paranormal investigators continue the search for their son, William, with old pals like Skinner and Cancer Man to help them out. Fox’s episode description teases, “The very fate of the world may depend on” the search, so, you know, no pressure. The indefatigable Zack is back on board to see if The X-Files’ season 11 can again reach the heights of the Were-Monster episode.
Regular coverage
Vikings (History, 9 p.m.)
Modern Family (ABC, 9 p.m.)
Wild card
Grown-ish (Freeform, 8 p.m.): You don’t really see a ton of TV spin-offs anymore except in the world of NCISes and SVUs, but here’s a welcome one from ABC’s Black-ish. In Grown-ish, the Johnson family’s Zoey heads off to college (California University! Just like the 90210 kids), where, Freeform tells us, “she quickly learns she may have a little more growing to do.” You don’t say! The series kicks off with a pair of episodes tonight on ABC’s younger, hipper counterpart, and we wish Zoey all the best in her new endeavors. (And look for her TV parents to make a few guest appearances.)
