Sean Penn is the saddest astronaut in this trailer for Hulu's The First

2018 is proving to be a big year for astronaut’s with complicated, non-Tom-Hanks-y emotions: Damien Chazelle and Ryan Gosling are bringing in strong reviews for their angry spaceman movie The First Man, and now Sean Penn’s about to be on TV (or at least Hulu), playing a guy who seems really sad about going to Mars.

We’ve written a bit about Penn’s new series, The First, before, when the first angsty-looking trailer aired. But this latest look confirms that these folks are seriously—like, Interstellar-level—upset at the chance to slip the surly bonds of earth and touch the face of god (or, again, possibly Mars). This, despite Natascha McElhone’s best efforts to make potentially dying millions of miles away from your family sound like a good, wholesome, and exciting time.

The First debuts on Hulu on September 14.
