See Videodrome in Denver on Oct. 16 to launch The A.V. Club’s Science Friction film series
Hello. Senior Writer Jason Heller here. When not slaving away in The A.V. Club’s pop-culture sweatshop, I love to spend my free time watching science fiction movies. Which is why I jumped at the chance to curate and host a new, A.V. Club-sponsored film series in my adopted hometown of Denver—to be precise, the suburb of Littleton—called Science Friction.
Alamo Drafthouse (located at 7301 S. Sante Fe Dr. in Littleton, Colorado) will be the home of Science Friction, which kicks off Thursday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. with a screening of David Cronenberg’s 1983 sci-fi/body-horror classic Videodrome—in glorious 35mm, no less. It’s one of my favorite films, and it’s my goal with Science Friction to offer an eclectic selection of sci-fi cinema from all eras, nations, and thresholds of weirdness. As long as I like it.
My co-host for Science Friction will be my old friend Frank Romero, who also happens to be a cofounder of Denver Comic Con among his many sundry accomplishments. As a bonus for those who come to Videodrome, we’ll be randomly giving out 20 copies of Cronenberg’s recently released debut novel, Consumed, to Alamo Victory members who buy advance tickets before midnight on October 15. (Don’t worry, it’s free to sign up for an Alamo Victory membership.) And, of course, we’re talking Alamo Drafthouse, the best place on Earth to see movies and eat and drink heartily while doing so—because if there’s one thing Cronenberg movies can do, it’s stimulate the appetite.
The schedule for Science Friction gets a little wonky following Videodrome, so pay attention: After three weekly screenings on Thursday nights in October, we’ll switch over to a less hectic schedule–the third Wednesday of each month, starting in November. Tickets and info are available here. Hope to see you all on the 16th! No, seriously. Every single one of you. I don’t care that you’re in Michigan or wherever you people live.
