Late Night With Seth Meyers host Seth Meyers also waited until Monday to make a televised statement strongly condemning the horrific racist violence that occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend. But he’s got an excuse—his show doesn’t air on weekends. And he’s not the goddamned president, as Meyers pointed out in a segment denouncing not only—let’s call it what it is— radical Caucasian terrorism, but President Trump for his lukewarm response to that terrorism. But what did we expect? As Meyers says, Trump’s got a shameful history of highly public racist comments, comments that have clearly emboldened the white supremacist rats to come out of their hiding places. “And now, whether he knows it or not, many people see him as leading that movement,” Meyers says.
“The leader of our country is called the president because he’s supposed to preside over our society,” Meyers continues. “His job is to lead, to cajole, to scold, to correct our path, to lift up what is good about us and to absolutely and unequivocally, and immediately, condemn what is evil in us. And if he does not do that, if he does not preside over our society, he is not a president. You can stand for a nation, or you can stand for a hateful movement. You cannot do both.”
