Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron's Long Shot of a love story gets first trailer
Motownphilly’s back again in the first trailer for Long Shot, a new romantic comedy starring Charlize Theron, Seth Rogen, and, holy shit, Boys II Men. And, yes, as is often the case with Rogen’s onscreen lovers, Theron is just a touch out of his league, but the above trailer doesn’t shy away from that fact. Rogen’s hapless journalist pined for her in high school, after all, and he’s still starry-eyed as a speechwriter for her presidential campaign. “End Of The Road,” we imagine, still transports him to simpler times.
If you’re still iffy on the premise, allow the talent involved to assuage your fears. Director Jonathan Levine helmed 50/50 and the underrated The Night Before with Rogen, and the supporting cast includes Bob Odenkirk, Andy Serkis, June Diane Raphael, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Ravi Patel, not to mention ultra-hunk Alexander Skarsgard doing his best Justin Trudeau impression as the Prime Minister of Canada. Also, as we’ve already made pains to point out, Boyz II Men.
And, though the film follows Theron’s pursuit of becoming the first female president, Rogen says the movie wasn’t inspired by the 2016 election. “We wanted to make a movie that acknowledged the political realities we all live in without trying to make too heavy-handed directives,” Rogen told Entertainment Weekly, “and at the same time make something that’s highly enjoyable and highly entertaining that appeals to as wide an audience as anything I’ve made.”
Long Shot lands in theaters on May 3.
