Your dreams of seeing Seth Rogen, Bill Hader, and Zach Galifianakis bumble their way through space anytime soon are being mercilessly crushed. Their currently untitled sci-fi comedy–previously known as The Something—no longer has a release date, according to Variety. The project about a group of astronauts who “find that they are not equipped to represent humankind in a battle of intelligent life” was scheduled to debut next summer on May 26, 2017, but that’s no longer the case.
Though Variety’s report emerged Friday, Rogen foreshadowed the movie’s doom in an interview with Howard Stern earlier this month. Asked about it, Rogen said it’s “currently not happening.” He clarified that it could get off the ground in “the future,” but “scheduling things” got in the way. Variety makes the reason for its present state of demise sound a little more sketchy, writing that “sources have indicated that the studio had concerns about the budget.” So, unfortunately, you will have to pick something else to see that weekend. That date is currently occupied by the next completely unnecessary Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel and Life, a presumably serious space tale starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Mission: Impossible—Rogue Nation’s Rebecca Ferguson. (A bit of funny counter-programming might have been appreciated, but alas.)
The good news for Galifianakis is at least he didn’t make this one already, unlike Masterminds, which kept getting delayed. It’s now supposed to come out September 30, but we’re keeping one eyebrow firmly raised.
