The oft-rumored Sex And The City prequel could find a home at The CW, which is now reportedly the leading contender in the year-long race to adapt Candace Bushnell’s The Carrie Diaries, the high school-set “origin story” that plumbs the depths of Carrie Bradshaw’s shallow existence, and fills in all the blanks for fans who actually have “blanks” when it comes to Sex And The City. Right now the deal is only preliminary, but The CW is reportedly interested in bringing the show in under producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, whose Gossip Girl already examines the lives of privileged, oversexed ladies through a prism of total fantasy and flippant pun abuse, and thus would seem to make a Sex And The City spinoff redundant.
Of course, that hasn’t stopped any network from producing their own Sex And The City replicas throughout the last decade or so—and that even goes for HBO, whose unabashed plans to remake Sex And The City, basically, somehow don’t include this, as the prequel has been deemed as skewing too young. So naturally, it should fit right in at The CW, as president Mark Pedowitz’s recent remarks about trying to emulate a twentysomething girl in all his decision-making and wholly believing in remakes now seem particularly prophetic.
Anyway, it’s interesting to note that not even Sex And The City producer Michael Patrick King seems to think this is a good idea, as he recently spoke for most people at a TCA presentation by saying, “My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33 and I took her to 43—I don’t even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw’s parents are. The idea of going backward, making her less evolved, is something that I can’t even imagine doing."
