Shailene Woodley might star in Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden movie
Oliver Stone is hoping that Shailene Woodley can do for the Edward Snowden story what she did for terminal cancer: make it really, really popular among teenagers. The Fault In Our Stars actress and committed foodie is currently in talks to appear in Stone’s next film, an untitled drama about the NSA whistleblower starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
The film will be based on Luke Harding’s bestseller The Snowden Files: The Inside Story Of The World’s Most Wanted Man and a forthcoming book from Snowden’s Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, entitled Time Of The Octopus. Harding’s book details Snowden’s time moving from Hawaii to Hong Kong, where he handed over the now-famous trove of classified documents to reporter Glenn Greenwald. Kucherena’s, on the other hand, involves the period when Snowden was stuck at the Russian airport, waiting to hear if the country would grant him asylum.
If she commits, Woodley would play the girlfriend of Gordon-Levitt’s Snowden. The Hollywood Reporter announces that the film is already in pre-production in Germany, with principal photography scheduled to begin in January.
