Shannon Purser from Stranger Things would also like to play Marvel’s Squirrel Girl
In what’s either a cool example of how mainstream comic books have become or proof that there are simply too many superhero movies, two people have now publicly declared their desire to play Marvel’s Squirrel Girl—not that there’s anything wrong with Doreen Green, of course, but she’s not exactly one of the brand’s biggest names. Earlier this summer, Kendrick announced that she wanted to play Squirrel Girl in a movie after reading one of her recent comics, and Edgar Wright endorsed that idea just a few days ago.
Now, though, Kendrick has some competition in the form of Shannon Purser, who played Barb on Netflix’s Stranger Things. Purser tweeted about wanting to play Squirrel Girl back in July, but she made her wish official in an interview with Revelist. Purser says that Squirrel Girl is “just adorable” and “totally boss and completely awesome” at the same time, and she thinks “people need a character like that.” She says women in superhero movies tend to be “super responsible and know what their purpose is and that kind of thing,” but Squirrel Girl is “a little bit younger and like a real person” in the way that she has to “figure out her life” while saving the world.
Of course, the most important part of all of this is that Marvel has given no indication it’s making—or even wants to make—a Squirrel Girl movie. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a huge ship that is very slow and very difficult to turn, so even if the studio is paying attention to all of this and really likes either Kendrick or Purser, it could be a very long time before a Squirrel Girl movie actually happens.
