Sherlock creators chart a carriage to Transylvania for Dracula series with Netflix and the BBC

Vampires remain wildly popular in culture, be they animated, ultra-hip, or of the non-fanged variety. The OG Dracula, however, has less currency, his “I vant to suck yur blood!” schtick feeling outdated in this age of horror reinvention. Of course, people felt the same about Sherlock Holmes before Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat reinvented him with Benedict Cumberbatch at the helm. Now, with the help of Netflix and the BBC, the pair is officially sinking their fangs into a take of their own, Variety reports.

Early talks of the project surfaced last year, but the BBC has now commissioned three 90-minute installments of an 1897-set series set in, you guessed it, Transylvania. “There have always been stories about great evil,” Moffat and Gatiss told Variety. “What’s special about Dracula is that Bram Stoker gave evil its own hero.”

Just how much of a “hero” the pair decide to make the blood-sucking count remains to be seen. We’re just hoping they’ve taken a few hours to rewatch NBC’s ill-fated 2013 Dracula reboot; those who cannot remember the past, after all, are doomed to repeat it.
