Sherlock's new trailer finally offers more than hashtags and ambiance
After two teaser trailers revealed little more than John Watson’s unexpected mustache, this new full-length Sherlock trailer finally gives fans a more substantial look at what’s to come in the show’s third season. It’s been two years since Sherlock faked his own death to protect his friends from Moriarty, and in the interim Watson has moved on with his life. And with Sherlock finally returning to London, the major theme of this season looks to be the rebuilding of the show’s central friendship.
Tensions are high as Watson’s voiceover declares, “I don’t care how you faked it. I want to know why.” (However, the audience does care very much how he faked it, so please tell us.) Sherlock’s response—“The one person he thought didn’t matter at all to me was the one person who mattered the most”—will keep fans guessing for the next few weeks, although the smart money is on morgue assistant Molly Hooper as the person who helped him. The preview also hints at a terrorist threat, presumably from the show’s previously announced villain, Charles Augustus Magnussen (Lars Mikkelsen). For fans looking for additional content (or just additional shots of Benedict Cumberbatch), BBC One’s website also has an interactive trailer with pop-ups that lead to clips from the new season—including one that reveals Sherlock isn't too fond of Watson’s 'stache.
Sherlock will premiere on BBC One on January 1 and will air in the US on PBS on January 19. Additionally BBC One will air a mini-episode online on Christmas Day, which will serve as a prequel to the third season.
