Shh! A nation nurses its hangover

Here’s what’s up in the world of television for Wednesday, January 1. All times are Eastern.

TOP PICK

Happy Endings (VH1, all day): The only proven hangover cure is time. A hearty night of partying leaves behind the traces of a good time in various toxins that need hours and hours to work their way through the body. An environment of total quiet is preferable for this process, but the shouting of six other grown adults who should probably know better is known to help lift spirits. (Sorry: Didn’t mean to invoke alcohol there.)

WHAT ELSE IS ON?

Amazing Water Homes (HGTV, 3 p.m.): Dehydration is one symptom of a hangover that can be mitigated. Drink plenty of water. Consider holing up in a location where the greatest amount of water is available.

Food Paradise (Travel, 10 p.m.): It’s a myth that greasy food cuts through a hangover, but positive psychosomatic effects are possible. Of course, eating before a night of heavy drinking makes it harder for alcohol to enter the bloodstream.

Kim Of Queens (Lifetime, 10 p.m.): One known preventative for a pounding head and a dry mouth: Moderation. For a study on excess, meanwhile, consult “Tweens are groomed into pageant queens in Kim Of Queens” by Molly Eichel.

Tattoos After Dark (Oxygen, 11 p.m.): You didn’t make any regrettable decisions last night, did you? Welp, too late to take those back.

The Hangover (TBS, 4:45 p.m.): HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Shut up, TV.

Superbad (FX, 7 p.m.): And then, when all else fails, there’s always the hair of the dog that bit you. Bottoms up to another new year beginning at a new low!

NHL Winter Classic: Maple Leafs Vs. Red Wings (NBC, 12 p.m.): Ice. Ice would definitely be useful in this situation.

WHAT IS THAT SOUND?

Whatever It Is, Knock It Off (Where Is It Coming From?, WHEN WILL IT END?): WE’RE TRYING TO GET SOME REST OVER HERE!

BEST OF TV CLUB

The Sound Of Music Live!: No, you didn’t hallucinate this in a end-of-the-year stupor: NBC broadcast a live staging of The Sound Of Music, it was watched by millions of people, and Caroline Siede has the full rundown in case whatever you did last night was an attempt to blot out the memory of The Sound Of Music Live!
