Because there eventually comes a time when cancer laughs dwindle to mere cancer chuckles, Showtime has announced that it is closing out its cancer comedy The Big C with an abbreviated final year of four one-hour episodes. Network president David Nevins—whose itchy trigger finger has recently seen him rashly killing shows after a mere eight seasons—confirmed the end was in sight for the Laura Linney-starring series at today's TCA panel, calling it part of a "transformative year" for the network, and wisely staying away from any puns about its sudden weight loss, even though they're right there. Of the finale, Nevins said only that its creators have "an interesting and novel and sort of form-breaking way to handle where the show's going," perhaps by adjusting it to include sympathetic characters doing things that seem recognizably human.
