Showtime renews Penny Dreadful for a third season

Delighting fans of sexy freaks who operate in the dark fringes of society, Variety reports that Showtime has picked up a third season of Penny Dreadful. The gothic horror series follows the adventures of a band of monsters, scientists, occultists, and wealthy socialites as they do battle with vampires, witches, the Pinkertons, and other entities common in Victorian-era England. Showtime has placed an order for a nine episodes, one less than the current season’s 10-episode run, which concludes July 5. Executive producer John Logan will continue to oversee the series.

“John Logan’s brilliant writing and this amazingly talented ensemble continue to draw a passionate, global fanbase,” Showtime president David Nevins says. “We’re excited to see what new haunts John and his team have in store for season three.” There is no word on next season’s nemesis, but it might be the perfect opportunity for Sir Malcolm Murray to stare down the ultimate threat to humanity: Gozer the Gozerian.
