Steve Selvidge, guitarist of The Hold Steady and formerly of Lucero, has music in his genes. The Memphis native was raised by a father who did more than just encourage his son to play music; Sid Selvidge set a strong example with a long music career that included the stellar 1975 solo album titled The Cold Of The Morning. Recorded in Memphis by the legendary Jim Dickinson—who also produced everyone from Big Star to The Replacements, and with whom Sid played in the seminal Memphis rock band Mud Boy And The Neutrons—the album wound up going nowhere after the record label that was going to release it folded. In spite of the setback, Sid continued to be heavily involved in the Memphis music scene until his death in 2013. Now The Cold Of The Morning is getting an expanded reissue, which kicks off with “I’ve Got A Secret (Didn’t We Shake Sugaree),” a sweet, supple, graceful expression of Sid’s folk-rock soulfulness.
