Sigourney Weaver fights off an alien invasion in Neill Blomkamp’s new short film
Back in May, District 9 director Neill Blomkamp announced an experimental short film project through his Oats Studios brand, with him explaining that he wanted an opportunity to test potential movie ideas and bring content directly to the public. This week, Blomkamp released the first installment of his new short film series, Rakka, and you can watch it below.
The short takes place after a massively destructive alien invasion, in which the Earth is overrun by hideous crocodile monsters that force humans to construct slimy towers that pump out poisonous smoke, and what little plot there is largely revolves around a small pocket of human resistance that is led by actual famous person Sigourney Weaver. There’s also an unhinged explosives expert and a man who has been experimented on by the aliens, but Rakka doesn’t really do anything with them. Future installments in Blomkamp’s series might return to these characters or this world, but it does seem like the basic point of this short is to let Blomkamp play around with these crocodile aliens and the creepy shit they do.
You can find more information about Rakka and download some of its assets at the short’s Steam page.
