No longer getting the same thrill out of manufacturing new pop stars, no matter how hard he massages his nipples, X Factor judge Simon Cowell is going back to one of the originals: Betty Boop, the 1930s animated star who paved the way for generations of cartoonishly sexy female singers. Cowell is partnering with Fleischer Studios and Animal Logic, animators behind The Lego Movie, to produce a “music-driven hybrid animated comedy” for Betty Boop, who’s known for her short flapper hair and shorter skirt, her flirtatious demeanor, and her signature line “Boop-oop-a-doop,” which is how people in her day expressed the deep emotional pain of the Great Depression. (Perhaps none so eloquently as Franklin Roosevelt.) Boop hasn’t been seen on screen since 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, making a quietly sad appearance as a fading star left behind by colorization and forced to take a job as a cigarette girl. Anyway, apparently she lost that gig, and now she’s working for Simon Cowell.
