Sinead O'Connor is done with white people
Sinead O’Connor made headlines a few years ago due to a well-publicized mental breakdown. Since then, she changed her name to Magda Davitt and began work on a new album, No Mud No Lotus. Last month, she converted to Islam, which prompted her to change her name again, this time to Shuhada Davitt. “This is the natural conclusion of any intelligent theologian’s journey,” she tweeted around the time of her conversion. “All scripture study leads to Islam.”
Since then, the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer has shared videos of her singing the Islamic call to prayer, the Adhan, as well as numerous thoughts on the patriarchy, Americans, and society’s perception of Islam. Of her many statements, however, one is sure to ignite the ire of the Twitterverse.
“I’m terribly sorry,” she wrote. “What I’m about to say is something so racist I never thought my soul could ever feel it. But truly I never wanna spend time with white people again (if that’s what non-muslims are called). Not for one moment, for any reason. They are disgusting.”
Davitt didn’t elaborate on this, but did go on to praise the power of women, saying they will “show you how to sing the devil to sleep” and, in the midst of a one-of-a-kind hashtag, “save you from your all STOOOPID SELVES.”
She also had some thoughts on Donald Trump, saying that women will “sing the fucker to sleep.”
Davitt also acknowledges that critics will bring up her struggles with mental illness in regards to these bursts of outspokenness. Her response? “If its ‘crazy’ to care” then “by all means, spank my ass and call me Fruity loops.”
Tempted though some may be to flood her mentions, we’d instead advise them to check out her newest song, “Milestones.” It’s really quite lovely.
