Singer Alison Sudol to make her feature debut in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them

A relatively unknown actress has joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, the Harry Potter spinoff we still don’t know a ton about because it’s based on a fictional textbook. Alison Sudol will make her feature film debut in what will be the first in a planned trilogy, alongside Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, a 1920s magizoologist who travels from the U.K. to New York to investigate magical creatures.

Sudol will play Queenie, one of the two sisters Scamander meets in New York. So far Sudol is best known as a singer-songwriter who uses the stage name A Fine Frenzy. But she’s also branched out into TV roles recently, playing a singer on Transparent and an archeologist on Dig (where she coincidentally acted alongside Jason Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the original Harry Potter films). As we previously reported, Queenie’s older sister Porpentina (Tina for short) will be played by Inherent Vice’s Katherine Waterston.

J.K. Rowling is penning the script for Fantastic Beasts, which will be helmed by former Harry Potter director David Yates. Variety reports Warner Bros. is currently meeting with both Josh Gad and John Krasinski for the role of Jacob, Scamander’s rival. Since Gad and Krasinski are two very different—albeit both comedic—types, this could mean the film’s tone is still somewhat in flux at the moment. Variety expects a final casting announcement soon, however, with the film slated to hit theaters November 18, 2016.
