Shrek is getting the deranged, scene-by-scene remake it deserves
In the 17 years since Shrek first smashed into theaters like an ogre bursting his way through an outhouse door, the snarky animated comedy has spawned numerous sequels, terabytes of dank memes, and even an annual celebratory festival in Madison, Wisconsin. But, finally, it seems Shrek will getting its very own scene-by-scene remake courtesy of a bunch of crazy Shrek fans. This is, of course, not to be confused with the recently announced Shrek reboot being done by the studio, which is also happening for some reason.
3GI, the organizers behind the aforementioned Shrek festival, have gathered together a crew of over 200 artists to produce Shrek Retold, a faithful remake of the original Dreamworks film presented in a variety of styles. Judging from the trailer, the film with consist of a mixture of hand-drawn animation, awful-looking 3D blobs, and a decent amount of live action. Each scene was given to a different contributor, ensuring the final product would be a jarring mishmash of low-budget Shrek content.
Needless to say, we don’t recommend this be your first exposure to the series. But, if you’re already a Shrek fan, don’t miss your chance to revisit this celebration of ogre-ness when the full film premieres on 3GI’s YouTube page on November 29th.
