Smilla's Sense Of Snow

Smilla's Sense Of Snow

Julia Ormond is a half-Inuit woman born with an exotic "sense of snow." When the little boy who lives downstairs from her falls from the roof of their building, she knows from his snowy footprints that he was murdered. It's up to her to enlist the help of mysterious neighbor Gabriel Byrne to help her solve the kid's murder by taking on the evil mining corporation that's been injecting people with the prehistoric killer worms they discovered while digging for an exotic meteorite. While this odd plot worked in Peter Høeg's novel thanks to quirky narrative and the author's ability to create a constant sense of menace, it collapses under its own weight when presented on the screen. The matter-of-fact way in which the story is presented serves as a constant reminder of how implausible the whole thing is. Add to this the single expression Ormond and Byrne are allowed throughout the film, and you're left with one more weak, confusing, ignorable movie that embarrasses its source.
