SNL promotes Leslie Jones out of the writers’ room and onto the stage
Actress-comedian Leslie Jones has been promoted from staff writer to featured player on Saturday Night Live, less than a year after being hired to work on the sketch show in early 2014. Jones was originally one of 12 finalists in a talent search that eventually led to the hiring of Sasheer Zamata; she obviously did not win that particular contest, but was invited to stick around and write some jokes anyway. She has already appeared in a handful of Weekend Update segments, including a rather controversial one in May, screen time that was instrumental in Lorne Michaels issuing the decree that allowed her to leave the dim, pee jar-strewn cave that is the SNL writers’ room. It is dim and full of pee jars, isn’t it? That’s what 30 Rock told us, and 30 Rock would never, ever lie. Right?
